Review of Import/Export (2007) by Dan B — 03 Aug 2008
Ulrich Seidl's latest excercise in drab miserablism has perhaps a smidgen more humour and tenderness than previous films but the result is still incredibly grim.
But Seidl does have an undeliable gift at framing morbidly poetic images of his characters dead-end lives and he is able to document his characters world with a convincing, documentary-like realism.
But it's hard to see what the real purpose of his film is as it seems to exist purely to mock and punish his characters in the most ugliest ways, with little to no real message behind the work. Unless of course you consider people are cruel and life is hell a worthwhile message.
