Review of Immortals (2011) by Allan C — 30 Dec 2013
Tarsem Singh described his film as Caravaggio meets Fight Club and that seems like an apt description of the film's visual style. Tarsem is an undeniable visual artist. His provisos film "The Fall" was a passion project that took him years to complete and has some of the most jaw dropping visuals ever committed to screen.
This film feels more like a commercial project and less of a passion project for Tarsem, but it nonetheless has his unique visual stamp on it, which does elevate the film above the similar 3D greek mythology garbage out there, like the Clash of the Titans films.
"300" worked better as a whole, combining a good story with striking visuals. This film equals if not surpasses "300" on visuals, but is lacking in a compelling story. John Hurt is good in his small role and Mickey Rourke is one of my favorite actors who is good as the villian, but it's an adequate if unremarkable cast.
Overall, it's worth watching if you're in the mood for a violent sword & sandal pictures that's is head and shoulders above Wrath or Clash of the Titans, mainly thanks for director Tarsem's visual style.
