Review of Immortal Beloved (1994) by Jane M — 10 Sep 2007
I remembering seeing this movie in the theatre and thinking it was all right, up until the final ten minutes. Then, after hearing Gary Oldman read Beethoven's letter, I thought it was one of the best things I'd ever seen and, more especially, *heard* on screen.
Historians can quibble about the accuracy of Rose's choice of the Immortal Beloved, and critics can (unfairly, I believe) compare it to "Amadeus", but the end result is captivating. Oldman has complained that "If someone was famous and they died, call Gary.
" All I can say is thank God they called him for this one, because it wouldn't be half as good without him in it.
