Review of Immortal Beloved (1994) by Daniel K — 19 Sep 2007
It's possible this would rise to a 2.5 after a second viewing, but I found it to be very uneven and unpolished. The script is a bit disjointed, choppy, and unfocused. Oldman proves once again that he is a consummate actor, but his performance is certainly not perfect.
I can't help but compare it to Amadeus. There really is no comparison. The music is obviously wonderful, but not even remotely as moving as in Amadeus. This is not due to the music, but due to the direction and performances.
There were powerful scenes and sections, but these were the exception. It's worth seeing for fans of Beethoven, but could be skipped by those indifferent.
