Review of Immortal Beloved (1994) by Kyungsuk P — 31 Jul 2009
A borderline-awful piece of work, somehow made all the worse by its delusions of grandeur. There are some great sets, and very elegant, detailed use of costume. The acting isn't all that bad either.
But I got the impression it was trying to be Barry Lyndon, without a tenth of that film's grace. It's a tedious, self-indulgent, characterless, seamy, overblown mess with no plot, and for a film about one of the most prominent composers, it doesn't understand Beethoven's music (or anyone elses) at all.
For a film that does understand music, watch Amadeus, or Ken Russell's film Mahler.
