Review of Imitation of Life (1959) by Nandi C — 04 Apr 2012
No film isn't complete on any African American's favorite list without this movie; An actress and out of work black woman with daughters team up to help one another out in an arrangement that works out well for the both of them, well, perhaps one of them.
Lana Turner becomes an actress, Juanita Moore becomes her beloved housekeeper with her tragic mulatto daughter who wants to be white no matter what. I highly suggest watching the 1934 version as well and get the both on DVD together.
One more thing. I didn't know Douglas Sirk directed this film, but during the 50s, he was one of few directors to direct early chick films(the watch em and weep em ones)and he was remembered for his work in the film Far From Heaven.
