Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Danny R — 07 Mar 2011
Once upon a time there was a extremely talented young actor named Joaquin Phoenix, who was a two-time Academy Award nominee for his brilliant performances in "Gladiator" and "Walk the Line," who suddenly retired from acting at the height of his successful career at the age of 34, because he hates the spotlight of fame, and feels like a puppet with no artistic control over his performances.
So now he has decided to become a performing hip-hop rap artist, looking like some fat ZZ Top clone from outer space, he intends to cut a rap album in between abusing drugs and ordering up hookers. This moronic mockumentary horribly directed by Phoenix's brother-in-law Casey Affleck is total waste of time, and a deadly bore that plays like a bad episode from some third rate reality tv show.
He records dismal rap songs that sound like absolutely crap! Phoenix has become a rant-filled narcissist who in one scene jumps into a crowd trying to endure his horrid hip-hop act, and tries to beat some hecklers, who are wearing fake breads to mock him.
I could only hope that this insanity is a Andy Kaufman-like hoax, otherwise Joaquin Phoenix has really gone nuts! Watching Phoenix's extended act of career suicide is a excruciating experience, so do yourself a favor and avoid this disaster at all costs, but just in case you do decide to watch it, remember you were warned! Not Recommended.
