Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Kyle E — 23 Dec 2010
Possibly the biggest disaster of a stunt in Hollywood history, it's all documented here in "I'm Still Here". I'm not sure how much weed Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck smoked while they came up with this idea, but it had to be quite a lot to come up with the idea for a two-time Academy Award nominated actor to step out of the limelight as an actor, and into this bizarre idea that he would become a rapper.
For starters, if anyone still had any doubts that Joaquin wasn't just acting here, watch five minutes of any of his "rap performances" and you know simply that it's a joke. No self respected person would get up there and make a complete ass out of themselves unless there wasn't some money being exchanged.
The problem with "I'm Still Here", is simple: much like Phoenix' departure from films, it overstays it's welcome. I'm not sure how much money Affleck and Phoenix thought they were going to make out of this little stint, but I guarantee you it wasn't enough to even pay the bills of making this disaster of a documentary.
The film, if we can call it that, is basically two hours of Phoenix smoking weed, snorting cocaine, and running around telling everyone how his life sucks and how he just wants to make it as a rapper, and yada yada yada. There's literally no reason for anyone to watch this, and there's absolutely no redeeming quality of this whatsoever. I was more baffled at the amount of times one of Phoenix' friend's shows off his penis, and the fact that at one point in the documentary, Phoenix orders two hookers and has sex with them, which is shown. Rather odd for a documentary, but hey, who am I to judge?
I, like the rest of anyone who enjoys Joaquin's previous acting career, would rather just see him come back to actually acting in films, and not this garbage.
And Casey Affleck? Man you did so good directing "Gone Baby Gone". This is a joke compared to that. Even your damn brother out did you this year with "The Town", and that was flawed.
Shame on everyone involved in this pile of garbage.
