Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Reem A — 09 Jan 2011
I believe that no documentary, or anything that must be edited in order to be presented, is completely truthful. Questions of whether this whole work was a hoax is irrelevant...whether it is or not, it is lacking in taste, intelligence, anything that means anything relevant.
I can only look at "I'm Still Here" as a really bad attempt to poke fun at oneself, because Joaquin Phoenix, or JP, whatever, through this homage of sorts, is just underestimating the intelligence of his audience. At the very least, he's insulting us by taking our kudos to him, crumpling them up into a tiny scrunched up ball and throwing it all in our faces and saying "I don't care if you love my work. I want to smell the buttholes of prostitutes after I do a line or two." He all but says that in the first few minutes when he's going on and on about how everyone perceives him as an emotionally intense individual who brings all that energy into his work.
Well, I'm a fan of Phoenix's past acting work, but after seeing what he wants us to think of him, I think he's ultimately a cantankerous, whiny and greedy attention hog with all sorts of disgusting habits that go beyond his lack of hygiene.
