It's like peeking through a hole in the wall into Phoenix's private life, but instead he takes a sledgehammer and knocks it down for you. Once he knows you're watching, he proceeds to snort a line of coke, and wanting the movie to be perfect, and the audience to love it, he then offers you a line of coke.
