Review of I'm Still Here (2010) by Mark P — 14 Jan 2011
Now it has been revealed by Affleck that Phoenix was performing in this film it casts the events in a different light. What's undeniable is that Phoenix puts on a fantastic freak show with genuine ferocity and that the film satirizes, sometimes to great success, the cult of celebrity and the value of perception.
What's also undeniable is that the satire misses more targets than it hits and, if there was any comedic intent here, then it fails horribly. The premise is funny, the film is not. What it does do is provide an insight into celebrity life that's in turns utterly revolting, disturbing and often downright boring.
If you don't want to see gratuitous male nudity then stay well away from this one. 'I'm Still Here' is an odd disheveled misfire of a "mockumentary" with brief glimpses of good filmmaking scattered throughout.
