Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Eric A — 14 Oct 2009
I like spending time in the weird, wonderful world of Todd Haynes, especially when he's in "Velvet Goldmine" mode as he is here. The quasi-anthology style keeps the anti-plot clipping along to nowhere in particular, and the performances are almost uniformly stellar (Cate Blanchett is, by now, the undisputed actress of her generation).
Wordy and metaphysical, many of the ideas in "I'm Not There" do get confused on their way out of Haynes's labyrinthine mind, but that's fitting for a film fashioned to be just as confounding and rewarding (and occasionally transcendent) as Dylan's own body of work.
