Review of I'm Not Ashamed (2016) by Literal F — 31 Jan 2017
Definitely one of the better PureFlix installments. They chose the perfect lead for this film- what began as a rough start was made up for in sheer talent and acting ability. They did their best to really make this Rachel's point of view and to bring her journal to life.
This was less a movie about the CHS shooting and more a movie entirely about her life. They made the audience fall in love with her and then they broke our hearts. It's easy to see now why people remember her and the impact she had on their lives.
The film brought in items from Rachel's life (either they were the originals or really good reproductions) of her art and mementos as well as original news footage of the event. Pieces of her life that collectively told the story in what otherwise could have fallen wayside to a very generic portrayal of the late 90s.
The movie is by no means perfect but it deserves a lot of credit for getting as much as it could right. It doesn't matter your religious beliefs because this movie is about Rachel's beliefs and everything that went on inside her head.
It was a privilege to get to know her now even though she passed away nearly two decades ago.
