Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Leo A — 03 Jun 2008
It's probably the cutest film about mental instability ever made. It reminded me of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in its almost overwhelming visual style and in the often surreal imagery inhabiting the minds of its characters. The first half of the film is (intentionally) disorienting, as you're kinda thrown into a world that seems to work on dream logic. The film starts to hit its stride once you familiarize yourself with the characters and their quirks, and they, in turn, begin to break out of themselves a little and really interact with each other.
There are lots of genuinely funny moments and it's nice to see that Park can switch it up when he wants to. He's shown a sense for the surreal with some of the imagery in 'Oldboy' and 'Lady Vengeance' but it's great to see that he can do comedy as well, after the generally somber tone of his previous work.
