Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Michael Y — 01 Nov 2008
First things first, if you are a fan of classical Korean melodrama, don't expect this film to deliver. Second, if you are a hardcore PCW fan looking for the next vengeance trilogy, or anything even remotely like it, look away.
PCW, with the cinematic clout he has obtained from previous movies such as JSA and the Vengeance trilogy was basically given a blank cheque for his next project. The outcome is a quirky, insightful and hilarious love story between a girl who thinks she is a cyborg and a schizo who believes he can steal personality traits.
The set design and camerawork are TOP NOTCH, the acting from the female lead (one of my favorite actresses since her portrayal of Su-mi in a Tale of Two Sisters) was great and the characterization was wonderful.
A LARGE portion of this movie is spent developing the characters which would probably lead most fans to think that the climax would amount to some form of action-packed cataclysmic ending. Wrong. Park completely takes a new direction and approach, although there is one particular scene of mayhem that hardcore PCW fans will like.
Overall, if you have a soft spot in your heart for small quirky feats of affection, this movie just might be the thing for you!
