Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Armando R — 16 Mar 2009
I like a lot of Park's films- Oldboy being my absolute favorite movie ever, and I loved Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance as well. Lady Vengeance, JSA and his little Maters of Horror short he did...not so much, but I still liked them. This though, I feel like I wasted my time by sitting through the whole thing. It's just plain weird. It's a little cute with how the semi-romance goes, but there's really nothing here. The whole movie is just the main girl convincing herself that she's a cyborg (maybe she is? We never know the full story) while in a mental hospital with other people while a semi-love interest helps her survive.
And that's really it. There's no struggle outside of her starving herself because she thinks eating food will make her break. There are a lot of secondary characters but such little time is spent with them that, apart from their introductions, I didn't care for them much. I'm giving this 3 stars mostly because I'm generous, but I'd be lying if I said that I'm a Cyborg kept my interest all the way through. I was ready to give up a couple of times before the half hour mark. If you're looking for something brilliant like Oldboy, save your time. This one only really appeals to a select few people out there, or the fanboys who buy into anything Park puts out, no matter what the quality.
