Review of I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) by Daniel T — 27 May 2010
I'm a Cyborg is one of the most flat out "mad as Christmas" films you could ever wish to see. From the director who brought us the incredible Oldboy, Cyborg is a bit of a departure but stays true to themes explored by Chan-wook Park in his other films.
Here we have again, the sense of life lost and honorable revenge but in Cyborg, all is in the mind with the drama played out in a mental asylum, a Korean "Cookoo's Nest" with as many well developed schizophrenic characters.
Beautifully shot, the viewer is sucked into a world that can only exist in film - yodeling Koreans, grannies pinged into space and the realisation of life as a cyborg. The supporting character, the thief, allows greater exploration of the existential as he steals such concepts as Thursday, humbleness and sympathy.
It shouldn't work at all but ultimately it's a triumph. Probably a perfect first date film, with a romance for the girls and bodycount for the boys. Bonkers.
