Review of Il Divo (2008) by Andrea C — 04 Jan 2009
I must confess... I did have a problem with this film. Yes, in a way it seems very brave, but I found it a case of look over substance. Too many subplots, names to the expenses of some real characterization makes it all look very good, but rather superficial. Worse than that, a couple of supposedly "dream sequences" really stick out and diminish the impact of a fim which could have been so much subtle and thus much stronger. Andreotti becomes the caricature of himself, and the entourage around him looks like a bunch of clowns from a circus.
I understand that this isn't a documentary, and needs to be dramatized, but there are ways to do that, without appearing so cheap.
I've learnt nothing more than I already knew about the man, or any of the facts.. and I knew very little to start with anyway!
I really wanted to like this one, much more than I did.... I'm sorry.
