Review of Il Divo (2008) by Toni S — 06 Sep 2009
There is a phrase in Il Divo that that really describes the overall plot of the movie. It speaks about how an Italian politician is a product of history, from Rome to the Vatican and the integration with the Italian people.
Il Divo is a very complicated movie and it's hard to follow. The movie moves back and forth with list after list of names, jobs and relationships. You almost feel like you need a notebook to get the right flow and make sure you understand what's going on.
Most of what happens in this film is so preposterous, corrupt and evil that only reality could have created such a character. Gilio Andreotti has no boundaries but he does have morals. He is not afraid to gun down a village but speaks with enormous devotion about his faith in god. If no one told you it was a movie he could be the front pager in the news every day across Italy.
Not surprisingly the film had rave reviews from the pros but it will be likely seen by about 8 people, including the guys that made it (even the studios will miss it). This is really a shame because it proves that good cinema is becoming more of a luxury that is shrinking while every week you can get some shit-hole movie like Bored of the Rings or 27 Dresses.
