Review of Il Divo (2008) by Mikey M — 14 Sep 2010
Ever so slightly bewildering to those ignorant of Italian politics (i.e. me), but engrossing nonetheless.
Servillo's performance alone is worth the price of admission, at times verging on the comical as it resembles a disarming mix of Droopy Dog and Nosferatu. The film itself plays like a stylish mix of gangsterland Scorsese and European arthouse, pinballing from slo-mo, pop-soundtracked character introductions, to fourth wall-breaking monologues. The latter is particularly affecting in the one scene where we see Andreotti really blow his cool.
Good stuff!
