Review of Ikiru (1952) by Bud Q — 31 Oct 2007
Ikiru tells a simple story in an unusual way to address this question: what makes life worth living? A movie like this could easily sink into sentimentality, but Ikiru doesn't. A movie like this could also have turned into a sermon, but Ikiru doesn't. Finally, Ikiru doesn't answer the question it raises, but leaves it open. The protagonist's example is compelling and courageous, but has he truly made a lasting difference?
If this makes the movie sound like a philosophical exercise, it's because I'm not doing it justice. Ikiru's emotional appeal is direct and powerful.
