Review of Ikiru (1952) by Ruth B — 06 Jul 2008
Films by classic directors can be off-putting. Like approaching great novels, at least for me, I fear that it'll be 'worthy'. The reason this man is considered so great is because of films like this. Of course it's old and balck and white but the immediacy of the protagonist's situation is so incredibly direct.
This is the story of a jaded bureaucrat who discovers he has not long to live. The news changes his life and he begins to live it. The lead is played with all subtlety and beauty. It's incredibly touching.
I love samurai movies, though they're so masculine and unwelcoming, at least to this woman.
This is a film I know I can watch in years to come and feel the satisfaction of participating in something so consumate and beautiful. It has re-ignited my passion for the classics.
