Review of Ikiru (1952) by Karlo M — 19 Jul 2008
Stunning and essential. Kurosawa weaves together both political and cultural study in the tale of a terminally ill bureaucrat's final days. Takashi Shimura carries the film on his shoulders, and his performance is truly devastating.
The chronology bending in the second half is inspired, and represents perhaps one of cinema's purest distillations of existentialist thought, even if Kurosawa himself didn't consider himself an existentialist.
