Review of Ikiru (1952) by Daniel H — 15 Aug 2008
One of the all-time greats. The old man's night on the town, through the swinging, drunken, glittery Tokyo night-life, is probably my favorite sequence of all time. The film is structurally daring - the second half a much slower post-funeral sequence - but once you adjust, the effect is obliterating.
A beautiful and profound meditation on what it means to be alive, and what to give your life towards, and ten times more entertaining than that actually sounds.
