Review of Ikiru (1952) by Stephen L — 26 Jan 2009
This beautiful film drags a little bit from somewhat dated storytelling. It might be a bore for other people but if you're really into film there are some beautifully composed scenes in this movie. The narrative revolves around an aged man who discovers he has terminal cancer and for once in his life starts to live every moment.
The message of carpe diem is heartwarming and heart wrenching when we see Watanabe's struggle to come to grips with his doom. His difficult relationship with his son seems only to get worst as he faces his end.
Kurosawa's story is truly inspiring, the scenes are beautifully composed, but the film is definitely dated and suffers a bit from being about 20 minutes too long. However, if you can sit through black and white movies that move a little slow then I recommend Ikiru.
