Review of Ikiru (1952) by Kenneth S — 21 Jan 2010
Possibly Akira Kurosawa's most heart-wrenching film, IKIRU tells the story of a man who is diagnosed with stomach cancer. Knowing he only has a short while left, he finally discoveres the joys of life.
The film continues after his death as his friends, family, and co-workers share their stories. Long-time Kurosawa supporting actor Takashi Shimura takes the lead in this film and delivers a magnificently powerful and nuanced performance.
This film is easily one of Kurosawa's absolute best.
