Review of Ikiru (1952) by Masorad ( — 03 Apr 2010
The carpe diem crapola is nothing new, but Kurosawa retrofits the standard tale with images out of neorealism, salaryman wish-fulfillment, and some narrative jiu-jitsu that is fresh and, well, revelatory.
There's real epiphany here, rare enough in any work of art, but positively transcendent as portrayed by Shimura on the swings.
