Review of Ikiru (1952) by Gregory B — 07 Aug 2010
An incredibly moving film. Kurosawa takes a extremely simple drama and turns it into a cinematic masterpiece. As usual for Kirosawa, the camera work is perfect. It's amazing how many iconic scenes he can pack into one film, and he didn't even need a samurai warrior! The film is impacting and extremely emotional without ever being over-the-top in its sentimentality.
And once again, he turned the story upside down with his organization of the screenplay, and instead of just doing it to do it, it adds to the story. Kurosawa was a master of his craft, a filmmaker way ahead of his time.
Worth more than one viewing if you ask me.
