Review of If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) by Jordan L — 03 Jan 2019
Please go see ï¿ 1/2~If Beale Street Could Talkï¿ 1/2(TM) if youï¿ 1/2(TM)re looking for an emotionally charged movie about racial injustice, life, love, family, and hope. Itï¿ 1/2(TM)s shot entirely in close ups, slow movements, and has long moments of beautiful cinematography. The cinematography is shot while we take in the feeling of injustice and how love and human connection knows no color. Jenkinsï¿ 1/2(TM) racially charged scenes are shot within moments of warmth, laughter, and romance furthermore connecting us to how these people feel and have to live day to day life. For African Americans watching this movie, the injustice does not come as a surprise however it should surprise you how accurately and artistically Jenkinsï¿ 1/2(TM) brings this story to life. As a white person, you may be surprised how Jenkinsï¿ 1/2(TM) vision is such a fresh perspective on love. You may sit there and say, ï¿ 1/2~Iï¿ 1/2(TM)ve seen the same movie over and over againï¿ 1/2(TM) but the thing is youï¿ 1/2(TM)ve never seen it shot this affectionately.
Jenkinsï¿ 1/2(TM) makes this great American book into a great American movie. Jenkins blew me away with ï¿ 1/2~moonlightï¿ 1/2(TM) in how he depicted a person that is never thought about in society to be an incredibly strong person. In ï¿ 1/2~If Beale Street Could Talkï¿ 1/2(TM), he shows us a coupleï¿ 1/2(TM)s love that is overlooked in society, but it is a hopeful, strong, beautiful, and heart warming love. I have an admiration for directors and story tellers that understand the best ending to a movie is not to give the audience what they think its all leading up to, but to show us the truth and let us sit even longer with what we have experienced throughout the entire film. In my opinion, The book and the movies ending is for us to feel hope even when we think we cant take anymore or we see the light at the end of the tunnel. All that mattered was the love along the way, thats all we will remember.
Side note, if this or Roma wins best picture Ill be satisfied.
