A terrifying film about an English public school, and by extension, an indictment of all oppressive institutions and our infinite capacity for cruelty. Malcolm McDowell (pre-Clockwork Orange) is mesmerising, the surrealist touches are well-judged, and the ending still has the power to shock.
No one is making cinema this brave today.
