Review of if.... (1968) by Andrew F — 07 Mar 2008
Malcolm McDowell's impressive debut film. It's a very surprising movie, and director Lindsay Anderson knows how to keep the off-kilter reality of his story fluid enough that you're never sure what's "real.
" Still, any confusion aside, it's got a lot of spirit and attitude. It's very much a film of the 60's, but feels prescient and even edgier today in light of how dangerous a place (physically and emotionally) school has become.
The trippy vibe and rebellious spirit of its main characters are balanced well by the sadistic people in charge and the stuffy setting. There are quite a few outrageous, playful and unforgettable sequences like the boys' brief escape from campus, the corporal punishment and the all-out war that are worthy of your attention.
I'd never even heard of it before I tagged along for a special screening, and it hasn't left me since.
