Review of if.... (1968) by Caleb D — 12 Mar 2008
Malcolm mcdowells first film performance and quite possibly his best. I preferred this to a clockwork orange for several reasons. I liked the alternating b&w sequences and thought they were effective even though their placement is not immediately apparent.
there are several fantasy sequences as well and theres no real break in any of those scenes to suggest when reality ends and fantasy begins. one could argue that with this film no one will ever be able to define exactly when those breaks happen or possibly even that the entire movie isnt a fantasy.
but more than a film about rebellion, this is a film about male adolesence and the improbability of dealing with the real world in light of it at that particular time. apart from all that, there are some wonderful and nuanced performances and a great ending scene.
