Review of if.... (1968) by Susan M — 31 Jul 2008
I love all movies about boy's boarding schools, especially English ones. The boarding school movie is possibly the most drab, most melancholy and cynical central metaphor for life -- it's human beings at their most natural and absurd, forced to coexist in a petty, stifling rank. It's the forerunner to the war movie, only with more chilling verisimilitude. And yet it's also so precious. So pettable. So soft and skinny and bendable. So wreathed in romance and nostalgia and homoerotica. Such a strange mix of harrowing and comforting.
This is one of the best boarding school movies ever. It's set in the falklands and it's really draconian. I love that word. It has so many wildly good moments. It sticks in your head like a long-steeped.
Dream, if dreams were teabags. This is some fine film wizardry.
