Review of if.... (1968) by Jerry N — 04 Aug 2009
Great performances all around. I love seeing a relate-able character that seems to take things to an extreme that we can only wish we were able to do or have the guts for. I can definitely see why it was controversial for it's time and it still is a bit edgy here and there.
I don't want to spoil the story because it is important to the film itself. I still think it is hilarious that the people who actually made the film still argue to this day whether or not the black and white and color mixture was arbitrary or not.
The producer says that they were running low on color film and that there were scenes that were particularly hard to light so they went with color. Lindsay Anderson probably took into account of this fact later and started using color in certain scenes as more of an artistic touch although it started as an arbitrary decision.
