Review of if.... (1968) by Jack G — 06 Dec 2009
Like a bottle just waiting to be popped. You wonder if it's going anywhere, but it's always, if sometimes subtly in that oh-so-British way, absorbing in its unsentimental view of the institutional horrors of a boarding school, and Lindsay Anderson is a filmmaker who trusts his actors to stay true to the reality of it all.
.. but then there's surrealistic touches (not least of all via the not-quite-random changes of black and white to color) that make the world a little more crazy. And when that bottle finally pops, wow.
