Review of if.... (1968) by Luc A — 26 Oct 2012
If we set aside obvious motives that would make cinephiles watch 'If...', seeing one of the greatest masters of post-war British cinema, Lindsay Anderson, in action for example; two other compelling reasons to get the DVD would remain.
First, one cannot fully understand Malcolm McDowell (Mick)'s performance in Kubrick's masterpiece Clockwork Orange without first seeing the scene in this movie where he enters the gym with a ironic grin on his face ready to face the thrashing of a life time.
Second, the electricity generated by Mick's meeting with Christine Noonan in the coffee shop off the A3... the violent climax at the end of the film is tame by comparison with the one that precedes it between Mick, the tiger and Christine, his ferocious tigress....
