Review of if.... (1968) by Bryan W — 05 Aug 2010
At first, this film seems to be bogged down by the need for a cultural translator. The display of the conservatism of British schools in the late sixties is probably a factual one, but most of the early acts of school discipline and the consequent rebellions are rather paltry and boring.
However, as the film progresses, the likelihood that the characters will simply grow up to be rebellious adults grows increasingly less likely as their exploits become more and more insane until the explosive climax.
A few of the actors here make an impression, but none so much as the film's protagonist, brilliantly portrayed by Malcolm McDowell in an early example of just how well he can embody the playful and sinister nature of a rebellious youth. If you watch this, you can understand how he soon moved on to 'A Clockwork Orange', but this film makes an impression all its own.
