Review of if.... (1968) by James A — 01 Oct 2011
If... Upon viewing I was mostly interested in trying to determine a reason for the switch from black and white to colour in the span of a scene or less. Upon inspection of the liner notes of the Criterion disc I was pleased to learn this was done solely to try and standardize the colour tones when shooting in the church.
Anderson also decided to keep it throughout the film as a reminder to the audience that this is solely a film, and a fantasy film at that. A weird union of reality and fiction in which some of a boys greatest desires are allowed to come true, and one of the most difficult to deal with is the ending, because he gets his wish but we never see the consequence of that.
Some great moments of fun and can almost be seen as a pre-quel to A Clockwork Orange.
