Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Chris A — 02 Jun 2008
Not really sure what to make of this- the plot was a bit all over the place. I did wonder in places whether the japanese has been faithfully converted into English which may explain this.
I have heard for a while about the level of extreme violence in this film and that there were 2 versions- the only one available in the UK being the cut version. I stumbled across the uncut version.
It starts off really well- theres some really nasty torture scenes and realistic gore. Also a particularly interesting part where the yakuza boss cuts his own tongue out. However as the story progresses it goes a bit crap and over the top- for this reason it kindof loses its appeal. Really over the knives on heels chopping an entire body in 2 type of things- totally ridiculous which is a shame.
Its one of those films you've just got to see out of pure curiosity. Dont know if I'd bother re-watching it though.
