Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Zachary S — 05 Sep 2008
Horribly directed and not very creative, this film tries every cliche in the book to make it seem 'bad'. Prostitutes, rape, dismemberment, sadism... it's all in there. The scenes are loosley strung together with an utterly incoherent plotline and horrid dialogue.
The film's events seem to repeat themselves over and over: look for someone, torture them with pointy sticks, move onto the next victim. Kikihara is the only character interesting enough to deserve any recognition, all the others are a bore.
This film utterly fails at everything it tries to achieve. The 'brutal' gore is extrememly overdone, and if you are a horror fan, will not even make you flinch--it's nothing you haven't seen before.
This film was a waste of my time and I pity those who actually enjoyed it for they have absolutely no taste in cinema.
