Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Daniel S — 23 Nov 2010
Beyond the blood, guts and gore, there isn't really anything to Ichi The Killer that is all that great. Don't get me wrong, Takashi Miike has a totally unique and fresh take on his direction which proves to do wonders for the movie.
Not forgetting Hideo Yamamoto's cinematography which also proves to be a storng aspect of the film. However, apart from aggression, sex, rape, torture, brutality and gore, I couldn't really find and identify the story and it got pretty confusing.
I must admit though that the reason why I watched the film in the first place was because of it's gruesome torture scenes! But going back to the good notes of this film, Ichi The Killer contains some really strong and creepy imagery.
Okay, this movie doesn't contain such disturbing imagery as Eraserhead and Begotten have provided in the past years but SOME imagery really stays with you for at least a few hours! I know it may sound stupid and not creepy if I say that it stays with you for a few hours but I am not going to lie and say that some of it's imagery stays with you FOREVER! For gorehounds who crave blood, torture and death, I beg you to watch this movie.
For audience members who actually like to follow a good story, just put a big X sticker on the DVD case because this movie REALLY isn't for you!
