Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Matthew O — 10 Jul 2012
Inspired from Hideo Yamamoto's manga book series. The material seems to have been lifted straight from paper to film. The films follows a Japanese gang searching for its missing leader. The gang are also after a faceless killer who seems to be hunting down many gang members and killing them in gruesome ways.
The gang is lead by its sadistic leader, actor 'Tadanobu Asano' Asian extreme cinema is famous for its use of intense horror and shocking imagery. Still Koroshiya 1 goes some. The torture is full on and the at times its comic book violence makes the likes of 'Sin City' look tame, no part of the human body is left un mutilated, be warned.
Still this is no Hostel style fantasy and a well written script and fine performances keep the interest outside the violence. This film as with most of director Takashi Miike work will split audiences no doubt, but the film is never dull, and has a totally unique style of filming making.
