Review of Ice Age: Collision Course (2016) by Crispian B — 26 Jul 2016
Took my eight year old to see this today knowing nothing about it other than that I have quite enjoyed the other instalments, and I was bitterly disappointed. In the original Ice Age, there was a simple, reasonably sensible story with a few well crafted characters, who did real animal things like migrate and hunt.
How did we get to a vast ensemble of assorted animals who have somehow adopted a modern American culture involving elaborate wedding ceremonies and using magnetic crystals to stay forever youthful. The whole thing was utterly contrived and felt like it had been cobbled together to make sure all the main characters from the earlier films were involved.
And if the story of an ancient prophecy about a huge meteor colliding with the Earth every 100 million years exactly, isn't ridiculous enough for you, then why not have a bit of Scrat in an alien spaceship playing pool with the planets.
Then again, I suppose the story had to be laughable because there were so few funny moments elsewhere. Having said all that, my son did enjoy it.
