Review of I Was a Male War Bride (1949) by Annemarie B — 16 Mar 2009
For a long time, I thought my favorite Cary Grant comedy was Bringing Up Baby. And then I saw I Was a Male War Bride. Though it is downright silly, my goodness, Cary Grant's comedic skills are on full throttle throughout.
I don't care if he plays a Frenchman with a British/American accent, he is completely hilarious. The painted pole, the railroad crossing, driving through the haystack, the doorknob, sleeping in the chair, sleeping in the bathtub, it's all a hoot.
I'm surprised at how racy it is, as well. I'm not a big fan of Ann Sheridan, but for this role, she works quite well as a tough yet beautiful female officer. Not as funny upon subsequent viewings, but still amusing.
Break out the popcorn and enjoy the laughs with this one!
