I honestly do not remember being as frustrated with a movie in a long time as I was with this one. It comes so close to being a lesser-known classic comedy and just coasts into "lesser-known comedy" for the last 30 minutes.
When you have Jeff Garlin waffling between a possible relationship with either Sarah Silverman or Bonnie Hunt, you have to work hard to screw that up. It's not the acting (everyone shines, Silverman being rather restrained and effective) and it isn't the dialogue ("That's another week in the poncho" may be the funniest thing I have heard in years).
It's the writing and structure that sabotage this. I'm not expecting gloom and doom with a cast (and plentiful cameos) this funny but the unnecessary mood shift does not work at all. Frustrating beyond belief but still manages to work its way into your subconsciousness (the desire to never give up a great parking space especially resonates with me).
