Review of I Walked with a Zombie (1943) by Julio S — 03 Apr 2009
People didn't understand what Val Lewton was trying to do at the time with his films, and the sensationalism of the movie posters did not help. This is a simply brilliant film in every way, not only for the cast, but because of the sense of evil, dread, and hopelessness that was conveyed without cheesy costumes or over the top acting.
I appreciate classic and grade B horror movies, but Val Lewton's films were in a genre all their own. Existential horror and dread for the thinking man or woman. Brilliant.
