Review of I Walked with a Zombie (1943) by Lee B — 06 Feb 2009
I am a big Zombie movie fan. As a kid, I watched a lot of scary movies because my mother loved them. I was desensitized at a very early age. They scared me, but by the time I was 8 or 9, I was jaded. We moved around a lot, but then we settled for a time right next to Colma, California ? graveyard capital of the country. Then, I had the most intense nightmare ever about the living dead. And to this day, I rarely have nightmares but the only ones where I feel scared are the living dead ones.
As for the movie, it took me a moment, because the movie starts off with a quick rush through the set-up that when that first ?scary? scene happens and the follow-up is more narrative, I had to turn-off my Zombie-meter that has been honed from me watching any and all modern zombie movie that comes my way ? which are actually living dead movies. This is a Zombie movie of the earliest sense. It?s Caribbean voodoo zombie and it plays well when I turned that part off. And when I did, this was a very enjoyable movie. And the sets are amazing since I am sure they didn?t go to the Indies. Great movie that should be a regarded as a gem of its time ? which I think it is.
