Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Waltertsolley — 25 Jan 2018
Deliriously entertaining movie that purports to tell the life story of former figure skater Tonya Harding from her point of view. “I, Tonya” is equal parts comedic and tragic, and features some of the best performances of the year.
Margot Robbie and Allison Janney are terrifically affecting as Tonya and her mother, LaVona. The style, and spirit, of “I, Tonya” is reminiscent of Jonathan Kaplan’s great 1983 biopic about Shirley Muldowney, “Heart Like a Wheel”, and I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a fact based, sports centric movie more since.
“I, Tonya” doesn’t even pretend to be objective. But a story that is this much fun, and gives you the feeling that you understand who Tonya Harding is, doesn’t need to be.
