Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Jason K — 02 Jan 2018
When you hear a movie "is one of the best of the year" sometimes it lofts expectations to a place that is unattainable. 'I, Tonya' is a solid, enjoyable, well-acted real story of Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, but it fails to achieve greatness as a film.
Margot Robbie is entertaining as the lead and Alison Janney, who plays her mother gives a usual strong performance. There's just something about this story that didn't work. The approach is one of half documentary and half live-action and it's blended uniquely.
However, the 4th wall-breaking, the music (use of the damn "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum, among others), and the weird CG during the figure skating scenes are enough to drive one mad.
It's fine, i'm glad I saw it, but it's not a life changing or a classic in any way. Final Score: 7.6/10.
