Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Brian D — 10 Jan 2018
At first the vulgarity and abuse is overwhelming. But it is a believable story of what made Tonya Tonya. Her mother (played by Alison Janney in an oscar worthy performance) makes Mommy Dearest look like Mary Poppins! Years ago I remember seeing Tonya and Nancy Kerrigan's quest for medal at figure skating competitions and when Nancy was hit in the knee, I like many others, felt sympathy for Nancy, the golden girl, and disgust for what happened to her.
However, as this movie evolves, you realize the back story of the abuse Tonya experienced and you end up feeling sorry for her. So good job, writers and director! However, if you're offended by dialogue that uses the F-bomb, this movie must hold the record for its use.
Tonya, her mother and her husband hardly utter a sentence without using it. I recommend this movie is you can accept that as probably the way it really was.
